Learn and Earn
Developed with SVS, an organization that advocates for workers
Healthy Neighborhood believes that everyone should have an opportunity for health and abundance in all aspects of their lives… in their body, mind and spirit, in financial security, as well as in a supportive community.
To help gain financial security, Healthy Neighborhood, in collaboration with the Shramik Vikas Sangathan (SVS), created a number of initiatives for individuals to learn a skill and, if desired, to become an entrepreneur with the opportunity to earn an income.
The following are areas currently being targeted for the Learn and Earn Program:
- Sewing and Tailoring
- Electronics Assembly (e.g., LED light bulbs, inverter bulbs)
- Farming/Horticulture Projects (e.g., Mushroom farming)
- Food Processing/ Packaging (e.g., spices, condiments, rice, millet, nuts, etc
- Domestic Workers
- Home Care Professionals
Typically, a group of 10 individuals who are interested in pursuing projects in the same area are organized into a team or union.Depending on the specific project, individuals may be offered interest free loans to purchase equipment or start up supplies.Training would be provided to teach the individuals a standard approach for sewing, assembling electronics,
providing domestic services or home care, etc.. In some cases, the individual will be issued a certificate of achievement after completing the coursework and after demonstrating competence in Healthy Neighborhood’s standards of excellence. Healthy Neighborhood will also assist by either purchasing products or assist in marketing products that align with the scope of Healthy Neighborhood. It will also assist in the placement of individuals in service areas.
Healthy Neighborhood may partner with affiliated organizations to achieve the goals of theseprograms.’
The objective of these programs is to provide individuals the opportunity for an opportunity to earn a living through a “hand up” ( vs a “hand out”).
