In 2001, a Padayatra revealed pressing challenges faced by the people. Migration rates were on the rise due to reduced agricultural income. This led to the deteriorating health status of the community. It took two years to form a humble society, convincing 4 farmers to go completely organic. Today, SOFA has evolved into a Farmers’ Producer Company with 926 Tribal Shareholders and 700+ Organic Farmers. They receive 5-10% above market rates for their produce which is directly sourced from the farm to your table, eliminating middlemen. The Farmers’ Collective holds 45+ Women Self Help Groups, provides Cattle Insurance & Loans to farmers, executes Water Conservation Projects, operates through solar-powered buildings. SOFA has received the 2019 News-18 CNN-IBN Award for the Best Farmers Collective in Tamil Nadu. They are an example of how a marginalized community can successfully organize and create a profitable enterprise, benefitting not only its members but also a wider community, all over India!
